Indian indices are likely to extend Friday's losses to witness a gap-down opening on Monday amid weakness across global peers on fresh geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine and fears of aggressive rate hikes.

At 8:30 am, the SGX Nifty was trading 111 points or 0.6 percent lower at 17,150, indicating a negative start for the Indian markets.

Indian indices snapped their three-day gaining streak to fall around 1.5 percent on Friday following a massive sell-off in global peers after US consumer price inflation data came in higher than expected. The Sensex settled 773 points lower at 58,152.92 while the Nifty fell 231 points to end at 17,374.75. Broader markets underperformed with the midcap and smallcap index down over 2 percent each.

US Markets

The US stock markets fell on Friday on worries over an imminent Russian invasion of Ukraine and concerns of inflation and interest rates. All the Wall Street indices lost more than 1 percent. S&P 500 tumbled 1.9 percent, while Dow Jones contracted 1.4 percent on close.

Asian Markets

Asian shares slipped on Monday as warnings Russia could invade Ukraine at any time sent oil prices to seven-year peaks, boosted bonds and belted the euro. The cautious mood saw MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan drop 0.2 percent, while Japan's Nikkei lost 2.1 percent.

Oil

Oil prices rose on Monday towards their highest levels in more than seven years on fears that a possible invasion of Ukraine by Russia could trigger sanctions from US and Europe. Brent crude futures was up $1.29 after earlier hitting an intraday high of $95.91.

At 8:30 am, the SGX Nifty was trading 111 points or 0.6 percent lower at 17,150, indicating a negative start for the Indian markets.

Rupee

The Rupee fell to a near two-week low on Friday, led by higher-than-expected U.S. inflation and a dovish stance taken by local monetary policy authorities. The Rupee on Friday closed at 75.38 against the US Dollar.

Gold

At $1,858, gold is flat in the Asian session in jittery markets at the start of the week. However, the yellow metal remains close to a 3-month peak as investors seek safety amidst warnings from the US that Russia could invade Ukraine at any time.

Earnings today

Firms like Eicher Motors, Grasim, Dish TV, Coffee Day Enterprises, etc. are likely to report their December quarter earnings during the day.

LIC IPO files DHRP papers

The Life Insurance Corporation of India filed DHRP papers with the SEBI on Sunday. The issue is entirely an offer for sale of 316,249,885 shares or a 5 percent stake by the Government of India.

Ukraine Tensions

Russia could invade Ukraine at any time and might create a surprise pretext for an attack, the United States said on Sunday. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who heads to Kyiv on Monday and Moscow for talks with President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, warned of sanctions if Moscow did invade.
