On August 26, 2021, the Government of India's Ministry of Labour and Employment launched the e-Shram portal. The goal of the E-Shram site is to provide free assistance to individuals such as migrant workers, construction workers, domestic helpers, street vendors, waiters, beauticians, handicraft makers, fishermen, and agricultural labourers at common service centres (CSCs), labour facilitation centres, state seva kendras (SSKs).

This E-Shram portal was created to keep track of all the data and compile statistics on the workers and employees in the unorganised sector. The data acquired will be used to create new strategies, programmes, and job opportunities for labourers and employees in the unorganised sector.

Unorganised workers include anybody engaged in the unorganised sector who works from home, is self-employed, receives a wage, or works in the organised sector but is not a government employee or a member of ESIC or EPFO. The E-Shram site allows anybody who is an unorganised worker and is between the ages of 16 and 59 to register and obtain an E-Shram card.

What are the primary benefits of an E-Shram card?

The E-Shram portal's primary goal is to make social security and welfare benefits portable for migratory and construction workers, as well as to give the central and state governments access to a comprehensive database for future use in responding to any national crises.

Additionally, it seeks to put into effect the advantages of social security programmes for unorganised employees that are run by the Ministry of Labour and Employment and other related ministries.

As part of the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, everyone with an E-Shram Card is eligible for a 2 lakh accidental insurance policy. Through this portal, the unorganised employees would receive all social security benefits provided under this plan.

The government provides the workers with monetary aid as well as other advantages under this arrangement.

However, before using the E-Shram yojana, the beneficiary must register on the official website and obtain an E-Shram card through the aforementioned steps.
