Sending money to a friend or a colleague without having to know their bank account or ISFC (Indian Financial System Code) is not a Herculean task anymore. Making payment through instant messaging service of WhatsApp is convenient as well as rewarding as the company now offers cashback to users.

The company has recently launched the cashback campaign for users making payments via UPI on WhatsApp.

For this campaign, the company has joined hands with RazorPayX, the neo banking arm of Razorpay, to enable a smooth cashback experience via Unified Payment Interface (UPI).

It’s worth noting that WhatsApp enabled UPI payments in February 2018. To make payment via instant messaging service, a user can start a payment to one of the contacts. For that, one has to set up UPI account on WhatsApp.

This is how you can enable UPI payments on WhatsApp:

1. Initiate payment by clicking the rupee symbol in attachments to the contact you want to send the money to.

2. WhatsApp will then prompt you to link your bank account to WhatsApp.

3. The instant messaging service will show the list of banks out of which you have to select your bank account that you want to link to WhatsApp.

4. As you select the bank account, WhatsApp will send an SMS to the bank to verify WhatsApp number.

5. You must ensure that this mobile number is the same you registered with the bank and it's the same sim on your mobile device.

6. Once this is done, you can send the payment and become entitled to the cashback

UPI crossed the $1-trillion mark in transaction values for FY 2021-22 after the payments system crossed 5 billion transactions in a month for the first time in March’22.

Within five years of the launch of UPI, over 50 percent of retail payments in India are now routed through UPI.

Manesh Mahatme, Director, Payments, WhatsApp India, said, “WhatsApp is often the first digital gateway for Indians, especially those in rural and semi-urban areas and through payments on WhatsApp our goal is to expand financial inclusion to those who need it the most. Offering safe, secure and easy-to-use digital payments is an important part of scaling India’s digital economy.”
