The last date for linking Aadhaar with Permanent Account Number (PAN) is March 31, 2023. If you do not link your PAN and Aadhaar before the deadline, then your PAN will become inoperative from 1st April 2023.

For any tax payer, Aadhaar and PAN are two key documents which offer a range of functions. The former has multi-fold benefits since it confirms an individual’s identify, whereas the latter enables a holder to facilitate income tax payments.

With Aadhaar being mapped to the card holder’s mobile number as well as biometric details, linking this to other documents such as permanent account number (PAN) opens several avenues, and facilitates effortless coordination between different government departments.

As the deadline to link Aadhaar with PAN looms large, it is imperative to first check whether your Aadhaar is already linked to PAN or not.

And if not, it is time to do the needful.

Not to mention that it is mandatory since one won’t be able to place a trade order in the next financial year if the two are not linked.

Before you start the process to link aadhaar to PAN, make sure you know the status beforehand whether it is linked or not.

We explain here the process to check the status:

Visit the income tax portal and click ‘Link Aadhaar Status’.

Here you will see the window like below:

It's here you can check the aadhaar link status on the income tax website.

You will get this pop up if aadhaar is already linked to PAN.

The second method

There is another way to check if your PAN and Aadhaar are linked.

UTI Infrastructure Technology has set up this website solely for this purpose.

Just enter your PAN No, Date of Birth and Captcha for verification. If your accounts are already linked then the website will tell you so.

How to link?

To be able to link your permanent account number with Aadhaar, you can follow any of the methods mentioned below:

First method: Online

At the outset, visit the income tax portal and click ‘Link Aadhaar’.

When you click this link, you will see a window asking for your four details: PAN, Aadhaar, name as given in Aadhaar and mobile number. Then you can click ‘link Aadhaar’ to complete the process.

I will appear as given below:

Second method

There is another method via mobile phone.

In this method, taxpayer is meant to send an SMS to 567678 or 56161 from your registered mobile number in the following format:
UIDPAN<SPACE><12 digit Aadhaar><Space><10 digit PAN>

For NRIs, it is not mandatory to link aadhaar to PAN. But they must file returns for the income earned in India.

So, for NRIs, to avoid PAN getting deactivated, it is vital to either link the two documents or to file the income tax return for the income that accrues in India.

It is advisable to link the two documents as soon as possible before the financial year 2023-24 rings in.
