The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq finished in the red on Tuesday as worries that aggressive moves to curb decades-high inflation might tip the US economy into recession dampened investors' risk appetite. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 48.38 points, or 0.15 percent, to 31,928.62; the S&P 500 lost 32.27 points, or 0.81 percent, to 3,941.48; and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 270.83 points, or 2.35 percent, to 11,264.45.

Asia stocks opened mostly in positive territory on Wednesday even as global growth concerns and weak U.S. economic data weighed on Wall Street overnight. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.35 percent, Australian shares were up 0.33 percent, and Seoul and Taiwan both ticked upwards 0.61 percent and 0.2 percent. Japan's Nikkei share average was down 0.18 percent.

Domestic equity benchmarks the Sensex and the Nifty extended their losses into the second consecutive session on May 24, tracking weak global cues. Sensex closed 236 points, or 0.43 percent, at 54,052.61 with 10 stocks in the green and 20 in the red. Nifty shut shop at 16,125.15, down 90 points or 0.55 percent.

Oil prices rose in early trade on Wednesday, boosted by tight supplies and the prospect of rising demand from the upcoming start of the US summer driving season. Brent crude futures for July rose 46 cents, or 0.4 percent, to $114.02 a barrel by 0020 GMT. The US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures for July delivery was up 58 cents, or 0.5 percent, to $110.35 a barrel.

The rupee ended 6 paise lower at 77.59 in the previous session on May 24 as oil prices rose amid tight supplies and the prospect of rising demand.

Foreign institutional investors (FII) net sold Indian shares worth 2,393.45 crore on Tuesday, according to provisional exchange data. However, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) made net purchases worth 1,948.49 crore.

Gold prices climbed amid weakness in the dollar index, 10-year bond yields and a sell-off in the US equity markets. Gold June futures contract settled at $1865.40 per troy ounce with a gain of 0.95 percent.

BPCL, Coal India, Deepak Fertilisers, Apollo Hospitals Enterprises, HEG, NHPC, Easy Trip Planners, Fortis Healthcare, NALCO, GMM Pfaudler, InterGlobe Aviation, are some of the firms that will announce their March quarter numbers today.
