What is the difference between NSDL and CDSL?

To open a demat account, you can place your request for either CDSL or NSDL. 

Both these depositories function like a bank for the investors.

They are responsible for holding various assets.

Which of the two is better is entirely dependent on the exchange that you choose to trade.

 NSDL was registered in 1996 whereas CDSL was registered in 1999.

NSDL is responsible for maintaining the electronic bonds, stocks, ETFs, etc. on NSE.

CDSL is responsible for maintaining the electronic bonds, ETFs, stocks, etc. on BSE.

Both the depositories are registered by the Government of India and are 
regulated by the SEBI.

There is no major difference between them apart from the exchange they are affiliated to.
