Their behavior can harm other borrowers' creditworthiness and access to loans.

Wilful defaulters may face legal consequences, including being barred from obtaining future loans and even arrest and imprisonment.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is taking measures to strengthen actions against wilful defaulters.

New RBI guidelines broaden the definition of wilful defaulters and require lenders to identify them within six months of loan deterioration.

Borrowers with the financial capacity to repay but a reluctance to do so will be classified as wilful defaulters.


Misappropriation of borrowed funds or failure to inject agreed-upon equity can also lead to this classification, with an outstanding balance of 25 lakh triggering penal provisions.
