The National Pension System (NPS) is a retirement scheme supported by the government, designed to foster savings and provide a reliable income after retirement. The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) and the Central Government oversee this voluntary and long-term retirement investment plan. The pension program is accessible to individuals employed in various sectors, including the public, private, and unorganised sectors, excluding the armed forces.

Individuals have the option to participate in the NPS by making a minimum monthly contribution of 500. The balance in an NPS account is determined by two factors:

  • Yearly contributions made by the individual.
  • Returns generated from investing 40 per cent of the maturity amount in annuities.

While subscribers receive a printed Statement of Transaction (SOT) for their NPS account once per year, they also have the convenience of accessing it online at any time for regular updates.
